Between the Lines pt. 1
Ink on paper
2013
This is the first (pt. 1) of a four-part series of works. The other three are on their way.
The series began when I was walking through my friend's rural backyard in Mill City, Oregon. A stump stood on the ground with a beautiful pattern and small cracks where the fibers had separated over time. I wondered, how old is this tree? It seems like it has been through a lot. After going home that evening, I entertained the notion that rings could actually be represented by the written numbers with which they correspond. You could take one look at a tree stump and know exactly how old it is, merely by looking at the outermost bark layer (ring).
The drawing grew from the inside out, from my memory of the stump.
